CANTO XIII

CANTO XIII

I wanted to know what it was like

To be brighter than alabaster

Smooth like marble

Pale and luscious

Like the foam

At the mouth of the waves

Because I could not help but hate

The hand that had formed me

Of clay

And so I was cast out

For wanting

And as the ash did fall

So did we

And here in the land of the brother slain

How could we ever begin to explain

What we lost that day?

    So we don’t dream anymore

Of a heaven stitched to earth

By a ladder for the latter

But I hope not in vain

That we will wake again

And although the words

Will not from our mouths spring

May the silence flood as it did back then

And here I lay bathed in black

My burned face reflected back

And if it were not for me

Could you have come to be?

But the words could not

Be brought to life

For sin was made a word that night

And not even the sea

Could wash us clean

For our burden be

To have no name

For all eternity
